The K2700 has one engine: the J2, a 2.7-litre non-turbo diesel with a five-speed manual, which Kia South Africa rates at 62 kW and 165 Nm. It is an old-school mechanical engine, with a rotary distributor injection pump and indirect injection rather than common rail, so its fuel parts are nothing like those on Kia's CRDi diesels. It is also not the same truck as the K2500, which is sold alongside it with a 2.5 turbodiesel, and the Hyundai H-100 may look similar but uses a different engine. For engine and injection parts, match K2700 to K2700.

When you ask: Tell us it is the 2.7 K2700 and not the K2500, and which body it is (Chassis Cab, Workhorse or Workhorse Tipper), so we match both the engine parts and the cab and load-bed parts.

South Africa has had a lot of Sportage variety, which is why matching a donor part needs care. Petrol engines here include the 2.0, the 2.4 and the 1.6 turbo T-GDi; diesels include the 2.0, 1.7 and 1.6 CRDi. Gearboxes follow the derivative more than the year: the 2.0 diesel moved to an eight-speed automatic at the 2018 facelift, and the 1.6 T-GDi GT-Line used a seven-speed dual-clutch box both in the QL generation and in the current car. Timing drives changed too, with belts on the 2005 to 2010 engines and chains on the 2010 to 2021 ones.

When you ask: Tell us the exact derivative, meaning engine size, petrol or diesel, and manual, automatic or dual-clutch, plus the year, because a 2.0 diesel from before the 2018 facelift carries a different automatic from one built after it.

South African Ceratos came with 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engines and a 2.0 CRDi diesel; there was no 1.6 diesel here, and the Cerato left the local range around 2017. Across those years it went through three engine eras. First-generation cars up to 2008 used belt-driven petrol engines and a belt-driven diesel. From 2009 to 2013 the petrols were chain-driven Gamma and Theta II units, and from 2013 the Gamma 1.6 and Nu 2.0 took over. So a 2.0 petrol from one era is not the same engine as a 2.0 from another. The turbo 1.6 T-GDi belongs to the Cerato Koup.

When you ask: Tell us the year, the engine size, and petrol or diesel; on a 2.0 petrol the year decides whether it is the Beta, Theta II or Nu engine, so a VIN helps us get it right.

In 2002 CAR magazine called the Shuma "arguably the most popular Kia model on South African roads". There were two versions. The facelifted Shuma II, launched around the start of 2002, got new front-end styling, with a new grille, clear-lens headlamps and fog lamps built into the bumper, plus clear-lens rear light clusters. CAR lists the Shuma II with a 1.8-litre 16-valve petrol engine and a choice of manual or automatic gearbox. The front and rear lights and the front-end panels are where the version matters most.

When you ask: Tell us whether it is the original Shuma or the facelifted Shuma II, and whether it is manual or automatic, because the front-end styling changed at the facelift.

In South Africa the Sorento is documented with two engines: a 2.4 petrol and a 2.2 CRDi diesel. The diesel is the one to be careful with, because it comes in two quite different forms. The 2.2 used from 2009 to 2020 is chain-driven, while the 2.2 in the Sorento launched here in January 2022 is a newer design that went back to a timing belt. That means a 2.2 from a 2015 Sorento is a different engine from one in a 2023 car. The gearbox moved on as well, with the 2025 Sorento 2.2 CRDi using an eight-speed dual-clutch.

When you ask: Tell us the year, whether it is the 2.4 petrol or the 2.2 diesel, and the gearbox type; on any 2.2, send the VIN, because the 2009 to 2020 diesel and the 2022-on diesel are different engines.

Every Picanto sold new in South Africa was a petrol car, with no diesel ever offered: a 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 engine, paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. What trips people up is the engine family. Around 2011 Kia moved the Picanto from its older engines to the chain-driven Kappa family, so two Picantos a year apart can carry quite different motors, and a 2011 car sits right on that changeover. Before taking an engine, head or timing part off a donor Picanto, match the engine size and the year to your own car, not just the badge.

When you ask: Tell us the engine size (1.0, 1.1 or 1.2), the year, and whether it is manual or automatic; on a 2011 Picanto, send the VIN too so we can tell which engine family it has.

The Rio has only ever been a petrol car in South Africa, with 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 engines and no diesel in any year. The older Rios, roughly 2005 to 2011, used belt-driven Alpha engines that CAR magazine describes as interference engines. From 2012 the Rio moved to chain-driven Kappa and Gamma engines, so a 1.4 or 1.6 from the older car is a different motor from one in a later car. Automatics changed as well: from 2017 the Rio used a four-speed automatic, and from December 2020 a six-speed, which are two different gearboxes.

When you ask: Give us the engine size, the year and month the car was built, and manual or automatic; on an automatic, the build date tells us whether it has the four-speed or the six-speed box.
