Kia’s 2.0L and 2.4L four-cylinder workhorses. G4KD and G4KE are MPI (port-injection) and are the units we recommend; G4KJ is GDI and is the variant covered by the engine-knock recall — handle with VIN check. G4KH is the 2.0T turbocharged unit fitted to Optima GT and the Cerato Koup range.

Common-rail direct-injection diesels. The U-line (D4FB/D4FD) covers 1.6–1.7 CRDi in the Soul, Carens and Sportage; the R-line (D4HA/D4HB) is the 2.0/2.2 CRDi for the Sportage, Sorento and Carnival; the D4CB is the 2.5 CRDi powering every K2700 and K2500 one-tonner in South Africa from 2004 onwards.

Gamma 1.4/1.6 (G4FA, G4FC, G4FG) is the bread-and-butter 4-cylinder for the Rio, Cerato, Soul, Seltos and Venga. Kappa 1.0/1.2 (G3LA, G4LA) powers the Picanto and Pegas. Nu 1.8/2.0 replaces the older Beta in the modern Cerato and Sportage. Lambda 3.3/3.8 is the V6 for the Sorento and Carnival.

If your Kia has crossed 250,000 km — common on K2700 and K2500 one-tonners running courier routes or Sorento family SUVs — pairing a fresh engine with a matching automatic transmission from the same donor vehicle often works out cheaper than two separate jobs months apart, and avoids mismatched torque-converter wear. For top-end-only failures (snapped cambelt, dropped valve, blown head gasket) ask us to quote individual engine parts such as the Theta II head casting or Gamma 1.6 head as a standalone item — far cheaper than a complete engine swap.
