Kia K2500 Problems in South Africa: What Is Actually Known About the 2.5 Turbodiesel Bakkie

We could not find a single Kia K2500 fault confirmed by two independent sources, and neither of the two South African Kia recall notices we opened names it. The K2500 is Kia's 2.5-litre turbodiesel cab-over bakkie, launched here in December 2013 and still on sale in 2026, and some of what comes up online under "K2500" describes a different vehicle altogether. So this guide sticks to what we could verify: which K2500 South Africa got, where its parts differ from the K2700's, and what to check on a used one that has worked for a living.

Key Takeaways

  • The South African K2500 has a 2.5-litre turbodiesel making 96 kW and 255 N.m, a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive, per CAR magazine's December 2013 launch report. Kia South Africa's current model page gives the same outputs.
  • It is not a turbo K2700. CAR lists a different engine, a gearbox it called new, and single rear wheels where the K2700 has twin wheels on each side.
  • The Hyundai H-100 sold here uses a 2.6-litre non-turbo diesel, so H-100 engine parts and advice do not carry over.
  • No South African source we found names the K2500's engine code, so we do not name one. Order engine parts by engine number and VIN.
  • The 2025 fuse recall announced by Kia South Africa, which the National Consumer Commission describes as an ABS fuse replacement, does not list the K2500.
  • Used K2500s cover big distances. When we checked AutoTrader in October 2026, the nine 2021 models advertised showed between 80 000 and 135 776 km, so the service record matters more than the year.

Five fact cards on the South African Kia K2500: launched December 2013 and still listed by Kia SA, a 2.5 turbodiesel making 96 kW and 255 N.m with no engine code in SA sources, a six-speed manual with rear-wheel drive, single rear wheels where the K2700 has two each side, and how it differs from the non-turbo K2700 and Hyundai H-100

Which K2500 was sold in South Africa?

CAR magazine announced the local launch on 16 December 2013. The K2500 was "an alternative" to the K2700, which Kia had launched locally in 2001, and CAR described "a new 2,5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel motor that produces 96 kW at 3 800 r/min and 255 N.m of torque between 1 500 and 3 500 r/min", sent "to the rear wheels via a new six-speed manual transmission". It came "only" as a Workhorse Dropside with a 1 000 kg loading capacity.

Kia South Africa's Kia K2500 page, read in October 2026, gives the same outputs for a "4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve turbo engine" and lists three diesel derivatives: Workhorse Dropside, a version with aircon, and a Tipper. AutoTrader said in August 2022 that the K2500 was "only available in a Dropside", but Kia South Africa now lists a Tipper too. If you are buying body or deck parts, confirm which body your bakkie has.

When we checked on 6 October 2026, all 42 K2500 adverts on AutoTrader were manual diesels, and the oldest were 2014 models.

Why most "K2500 problems" results are not about your bakkie

Two things muddy the search results.

The name is shared. In America, General Motors sold a GMC K2500. A US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall record (campaign 93V016000) lists the 1990 GMC K2500 among General Motors "light trucks with 5.0 L, 5.7 L, and 7.4 L engines". American posts about a K2500 with one of those big engines are about that truck, not this Kia.

The Hyundai lookalike has a different engine. AutoTrader's September 2023 comparison says the Hyundai H-100 "might look a lot like its Kia cousin, but their similarities are mostly visual and use completely different powerplants", and gives the H-100 "a 2.6-litre non-turbo diesel engine with 58 kW and 167 Nm". A prospective buyer on the South African 4x4Community forum made the same point in March 2023: "I see they have a turbo as opposed to the Hyundai h100."

The same applies closer to home. The Kia K2700 runs what Kia South Africa calls "a 2.7 litre, 4-cylinder, J2 diesel" making 62 kW, and AutoTrader notes that it "has to make do without a turbocharger". Our K2700 problems guide covers that engine, and its engine advice should not be applied to the K2500.

The engine code: why we do not name one

Kia South Africa and CAR give the K2500's capacity, layout and outputs but no engine code, and we could not tie a code to the South African car from any source we opened, so we do not name one. For the same reason we have not described its injection system or its camshaft drive. No South African source we opened states either.

The practical fix costs nothing. Read the engine number off the block and the VIN off the licence disc before you order anything for the engine, and send both with your enquiry. A tested used unit from our used Kia engines range is matched on those numbers, not on a code from a website.

Where a K2500 differs from a K2700 when you order parts

From the side the two bakkies look alike, which is exactly why wrong parts get ordered. CAR's launch report lists the differences that matter:

  • Engine. A 2.5 turbodiesel against the K2700's non-turbo 2.7. The turbo and engine-mounted parts are not interchangeable on sight.
  • Gearbox. CAR called the K2500's six-speed manual "new" in 2013. Do not assume a K2700 gearbox or its internals will fit.
  • Rear axle and wheels. The K2500 uses "a single wheel on each side of the rear axle instead of two", so rear hubs, wheels and axle parts need checking against the VIN.
  • Front bumper. CAR notes "a body-coloured front bumper" as a K2500 styling difference. Our Kia body parts team will want the model and colour.

CAR called the K2500's six-speed manual new at launch, so do not assume a K2700 gearbox fits. Send us your VIN and we will match a complete gearbox to it.

What forums and owner reviews show

We looked for owner evidence and found very little that is specific to this bakkie. The only South African forum thread we could read in full, "Kia K2500 any good?" on 4x4Community from March 2023, has four replies to a prospective buyer's question. None describes a K2500 fault with a cause. One member wrote that he had "towed a couple of them" without saying why, two of the replies are about the K2700, and one is about the Hyundai H100. That is not a pattern, and we have not treated it as one.

The K2500 is also sold in the Philippines, where Kia Philippines quotes 130 PS (about 96 kW) and 255 Nm from 2 497 cc, matching the South African outputs. Philippine owner reviews are mostly positive: when we checked in October 2026, ZigWheels Philippines said 32 of the 34 owners who had reviewed it were happy. The complaint that comes up on both ZigWheels and AutoDeal is a harsh ride on rough roads, and one AutoDeal reviewer put it as "rough ride empty, good ride loaded". That is a Philippine owner impression about ride comfort, not a mechanical fault, and we found no Philippine source for a recurring failure either.

What that leaves is ordinary wear on a hard-used workhorse. The clutch is a wear part on every manual K2500, and our guide to Kia clutch problems covers the symptoms and what to replace together. If a clutch replacement turns up worn synchros or a noisy bearing, a tested unit from our used Kia gearboxes stock is an alternative to a rebuild.

Recalls on the K2500 in South Africa

The one Kia recall we found published in South Africa does not include it. Kia South Africa's announcement of 5 February 2025 lists the Sportage, Cerato, Soul, Sorento and Optima, with the fuses connected to the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) being replaced. The National Consumer Commission's notice of 8 December 2025 calls it an ABS fuse replacement and names the same five models. Neither mentions the K2500. That is a statement about those two notices, not proof that no K2500 campaign exists, so run your VIN through Kia's campaign check anyway. Our guide to checking a Kia recall in South Africa shows how.

Buying a used K2500

  • Expect high mileage. On 6 October 2026 AutoTrader carried 42 K2500 adverts. The nine 2021 models showed between 80 000 and 135 776 km, and the four 2014 models between 199 000 and 248 000 km.
  • Match the service book to the schedule. AutoTrader's specification database lists a 10 000 km service interval and a three-year or 60 000 km service plan, the same plan CAR reported at launch. Defer to the service book for your car's exact schedule, and treat long gaps between stamps as a reason to ask questions.
  • Check the warranty terms it was sold under. CAR reported a five-year or 150 000 km warranty at launch in 2013. Terms can change between model years, so give a Kia dealer the VIN and ask what cover still applies before paying for a big repair.
  • Pull away loaded, if you can. A clutch that slips on a laden hill start, or a gearbox that crunches between gears, is a negotiating point.
  • Look under the back. Confirm single rear wheels, and listen for whine from the rear axle on the road test.
  • Record the engine number before you buy, so parts can be matched later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the Kia K2500 have in South Africa?
A 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel producing 96 kW at 3 800 r/min and 255 N.m between 1 500 and 3 500 r/min, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. That is how CAR magazine described it at the South African launch in December 2013, and Kia South Africa's current K2500 page gives the same outputs. Neither source names an engine code, so order engine parts using the engine number and VIN.
Is the Kia K2500 just a K2700 with a turbo?
No. Kia South Africa describes the K2700 engine as a 2.7-litre J2 diesel making 62 kW, and AutoTrader notes that it has no turbocharger. CAR's 2013 launch report gives the K2500 a different 2.5-litre turbodiesel, a gearbox it described as a new six-speed manual, single rear wheels instead of twin rear wheels, and a body-coloured front bumper. Engine, gearbox and rear-axle parts should be matched to the VIN, not swapped between the two.
Does the Kia K2500 share its engine with the Hyundai H-100?
Not the H-100 sold in South Africa. AutoTrader's September 2023 comparison gives the H-100 a 2.6-litre non-turbo diesel with 58 kW and 167 Nm, and says the Kia and Hyundai trucks use completely different powerplants. The K2500 is a 96 kW turbodiesel.
Is there a recall on the Kia K2500 in South Africa?
We found none. The fuse recall that Kia South Africa announced on 5 February 2025, and that the National Consumer Commission published on 8 December 2025 as an ABS fuse replacement, covers the Sportage, Cerato, Soul, Sorento and Optima, not the K2500. That only covers those two notices, so check your VIN with Kia's campaign check to be sure.
How often should a Kia K2500 be serviced?
AutoTrader's specification database lists a 10 000 km service interval for the K2500 dropside, with a three-year or 60 000 km service plan, and CAR reported the same service plan at the 2013 launch. Always follow the service book for your particular vehicle, because a bakkie that covers work mileage reaches each interval quickly.
